Hello
Do i need to give Plastic material properties (Yield stress and Plastic strain) to analyze at what load the body gets deformed or only Elastic property(Young's and Poisson's ratio) is enough?
I did analysis using both elastic-plastic properties and only elastic properties and i see a difference in deformation values both visually and in report output.
Hello Sir
Thank you so much. I will try both methods and let you know. Thanks for letting me know regarding the Static Riks Analysis, i didn't know about the methodology before.

Dear Tusar,
You should apply the properties of the Zinc -Zarmak 3 material in your Abaqus model and make an assumption regarding the point of failure of the gear tooth (e.g. a maximum stress or deformation measure, etc.). For example, if a maximum deformation is assumed and the calculated deformation exceeds this limit, then failure is considered to occur.
If inertial effects are negligible, you can perform either a general static analysis or a Riks static analysis. In the case of a general static analysis (*STATIC) you have to manually check the exceedance of the strength limits as above. In the case of a static Riks analysis (*STATIC, RIKS) the load-deformation curve is traced and from its shaoe you can see where the gear tooth fails.
I hope this helps,
George
Hello Sir
Thank you for the prompt reply.
I am trying to solve FEA on a gear and taking Zinc -Zarmak 3 as the material property. I am applying a pressure on one of the gear teeth and trying to see the deformation due to the pressure. I wanted to calculate the strength of the gear and if the material (Zinc-Zarmak) can withstand that load on the gear tooth (If the tooth shears off). So i took both elastic and plastic material property for this. But do i need plastic material properties for this? What is the best methodology to solve such type of problems?
Hi Tusar,
Linear and nonlinear materials exhibit different response in general.
Could you explain the statement "analyze at what load the body gets deformed" in more detail? What problem exactly do you want to solve?
Best,
George
